CWU members give refugee support

Members of the CWU Race Advisory Committee (RAC) have returned from a mission to distribute supplies to refugees in Calais whose conditions have “deteriorated markedly” since the “Jungle” camp was dismantled.

The RAC members took warm clothing, sleeping bags, tents, toiletries and non-perishable foodstuffs to refugees, for whom humanitarian aid has “fallen off the media radar” with the Jungle gone.

This makes it harder for charities like Care4Calais to maintain public support and get aid to those who need it most.

There are still estimated to be more than 3,000 refugees sleeping rough around the French channel port. But the lack of even the basic facilities that were available in the Jungle, such as running water, has meant their plight is “even more desperate”, said Fevzi Hussein of the CWU’s equalities department.
