Schools’ performance

Schools that remain in their local authority perform better in Ofsted inspections than those that have converted to academies, according to new research for the Local Government Association (LGA).

It found that by the end of January 2023, 93% of council-maintained schools were rated outstanding or good, compared to 87% of academies that were graded since they converted.

Outgoing NEU teaching union joint general secretary Mary Bousted said the findings “demonstrate the value of a democratically organised and supported school system”.

She said enacting the LGA’s recommendations, including allowing councils to open new maintained schools, would be a step in the right direction for any future government “serious about improving our school system and making it fairer and more equitable”.
