Disability action plan receives short shrift

The government has published a Disability Action Plan setting out in 32 points how it intends to improve the lives of disabled people in the UK.

This includes introducing a “disability enabled” badge to signpost businesses that train their staff in disability awareness.

But the response from disabled people’s organisations has been overwhelmingly negative, with criticism expressed over the lack of new policies, legislation or spending commitments before the general election.

For example, the Disability Rights UK campaigning organisation has been scathing of the plan, arguing that it neither protects nor enhances disabled peoples’ rights.
