Quotas for sexes rejected
The European Parliament has rejected a proposal that would have
introduced quotas to produce a more equal representation between men and women in its ranks. Instead it agreed a proposal calling for greater equality, with never less than 40% of any body being male or female, and agreeing that quotas could be a "transitional mechanism" to achieve this. At present 30% of the European Parliament are women.
