New TUC leader

The next general secretary of the TUC will be the current deputy, Brendan Barber. He was the only nomination to replace John Monks, who is leaving to head the European TUC in May.

Barber joined the TUC's Organisation and Industrial Relations Department in 1975 and became deputy general secretary in 1993.

Along the way he has been linked with the TUC's "United against racism" campaign, its Organising Academy and action to promote the TUC's fairness at work agenda with the incoming Labour government.
