Irish pay deal hangs in balance

Talks on a new national pay deal in Ireland were taking place as Labour Research went to press. The negotiations, to replace a previous three-year national agreement which ran out at the end of last year, collapsed before Christmas but were restarted following government intervention.

The key points at issue are: the level of pay increases - the employers were arguing for a pay freeze; compliance with any pay norm; and statutory union recognition.
