CWU celebrates Royal Mail learners

The Mallusk Mail Centre in Belfast played host to a "celebration of learning" last month as 25 Royal Mail employees were recognised for their learning achievements.

Area manager Michael Kennedy noted that 600 staff had enrolled on courses at the site's learning centre, run by the CWU communication workers' union, in the last two years - with over a third already receiving certificates and accreditation.

He also recognised that "none of this would have been possible" without the efforts of CWU learning reps, commenting that they "should be especially proud of their achievements in engaging learners".

CWU general secretary Billy Hayes praised the company's continued support for the learning centre, explaining that the ability to talk to colleagues in confidence about their learning needs gave many workers a sense of confidence that they may have lacked in the past. "Learning is a win-win situation for both the CWU and Royal Mail, as confident employees and members made better employees and members," he added.

All the region's CWU branches were represented at the Mallusk event, and the union hopes that their presence will encourage other members to engage in learning.
