Bullying survey

A survey of NHS workers carried out by the GMB general union reveals bullying is a huge problem. The survey entitled Stamping out the bullies was sent to 10,000 NHS workers and well over half of respondents had experienced bullying and stated it had affected their health. Problems included nausea and sleeplessness and, more seriously, high blood pressure and mental illness such as depression.

Commenting on the survey findings, Sharon Holder, GMB national officer for the NHS, said: These results are particularly disturbing at a time when the NHS is trying to retain existing staff and attract new workers. Who wants to work in an organisation rife with bullies?

"Harassment is rife in the NHS and we urgently need a policy of zero tolerance. The GMB is a key stakeholder working with the NHS Executive to develop guidance for NHS employers on tackling harassment."
