Print apprenticeships

Unite is calling for the print industry to promote apprenticeships, as part of its support for the 2010 National Apprenticeship Week being held on 1-5 February. The union is concerned by the slow take-up of print apprenticeships.

“The printing industry has always been a great industry to work in,” said Unite assistant general secretary Tony Burke. “But with an ageing workforce and an industry that is becoming increasingly high-tech and competitive, there is a recognition that the industry always needs new blood.”

He added that the industry workforce should also develop its skills in order to weather the current economic climate and prepare for technical innovation, as well as changes in consumer demand.
