Health & safety - HSE Monitor

Quarrying, pathogens and GMO consultations

The HSE has proposed revising the approved code of practice (ACOP) to the Quarries Regulations 1999. The proposals include updating references to other legislation that applies in the quarrying industry and clarifications to ensure consistency with industry guidance.

In addition, the HSE has proposed a Legislative Reform Order (LRO) to introduce a single set of regulations covering all contained-use work with human and animal pathogens and genetically modified organisms (GMOs). At present the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations 2002 cover biological agents and the Genetically Modified Organisms (Contained Use) Regulations 2000 cover GMOs, while the handling of certain animal pathogens in contained use is covered by the Specified Animal Pathogens Order. The LRO would extend the HSE’s regulatory powers to cover biological agents that pose a risk to animal health.
