HSE asbestos training scheme targets apprentices

Thousands of trainee joiners, electricians and plumbers are being warned through their training colleges about the dangers of working with asbestos, the UK’s biggest workplace killer. Following a successful pilot, six colleges across the North West are being provided with a pack of teaching materials prepared by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

The Introduction to asbestos learning package targets new apprentices. HSE board member David Gartside said: “Many young trades people believe that, because asbestos is no longer used in buildings, it’s no longer a threat to them. But that simply isn’t true. The material was widely used for fireproofing and insulation up until 10 years ago, so there’s every chance that they could come into contact with it.”
