Heavier penalties for phone use while driving

Drivers who endanger lives by using hand held mobile phones while driving will face increased penalties under government proposals.

The number of penalty points will increase from three to four, while the fixed penalty notice will rise from £100 to £150.For drivers of larger vehicles such as heavy goods vehicles, where the consequences of an accident can be much more severe, the number of penalty points will increase from three to six.

The proposals, which are part of the government’s Road Safety Plan, are aimed at targeting those who repeatedly offend. A consultation will be held on the plans in early 2016.
