Workers on the board?


Theresa May, the new Conservative prime minister, has promised a shake-up in corporate governance, saying workers and customers should have places on company boards.


Workers on company boards has long been a TUC demand. General secretary Frances O’Grady said such a move would “inject a much-needed dose of reality into boardrooms, as well as putting the brakes on the multi-million pay and bonus packages which have done so much to damage the reputation of corporate Britain”.


May has also committed to making shareholder votes on corporate pay binding, rather than advisory as at present. Company remuneration committees have just paid lip service to shareholder discontent over top executive pay, which seemingly ratchets ever higher.
