No delay on apprenticeship levy

The government is not anticipating any change to either the timing or nature of the apprenticeship levy as a result of the UK’s decision to leave the European Union, according to skills minister Nick Boles.

The minister said the levy – which comes into force in April 2017 – would go ahead, despite speculation that business groups would cite the EU referendum and subsequent negotiations as reasons for a delay.

Boles said traineeships and apprenticeships were vital to the labour market, and emphasised the importance of investing in skills development. “It is even more vital now the UK is not in the EU,” he said. “There is going to be more money going into apprenticeships, and adult training funding is also secure.”
