Pay cut at M&S

Shopworkers’ union Usdaw and the GMB general union have protested at plans by retailers Marks and Spencer to cut pay premiums and pension contributions.

The company plans to terminate extra pay for working on Sundays and reduce bank holiday premiums. Anti-social hours’ payments are being restricted to those starting work before 6am rather than 7am.

Reductions in pension contributions are expected to hit around 11,000 workers.

Usdaw has called on the company to open talks on the proposed changes and possible store closures. However, the company refuses to give recognition to the union.

GMB national officer Harry Donaldson said: “Marks and Spencer claim that the new pay structure will make the company more sustainable and give workers ‘parity’ across the organisation but as usual we’re seeing long-standing, low paid employees being the worst affected.”
