Furniture store fined £1m

As Sentencing Council guidelines introduced in February 2016 continue to bite, another company has been hit with a large fine over safety offences.

Last month, furniture retailer DFS Trading Limited was fined £1 million after the company pleaded guilty to breaching the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999.

An HSE investigation into an incident which left a worker with serious neck and head injuries after he was struck by an unsecured furniture arm found that the company failed to adequately manage the risks of heavy loads being moved between manufacturing sites.
