Black workers take a big hit from austerity

Black workers have been hit harder by austerity according to an equalities survey conducted by public services union UNISON.

The survey found that a significant proportion of all members were experiencing financial hardship and this was even worse among the union’s black members. Up to 43 out of every 100 said that their standard of living was worse than a year ago but among those who identify as black 50 out of 100 said their living standards have dropped.

The survey also found that two-thirds (66%) of black members went without a holiday this year compared to 50% of all members. Even more worryingly almost one in four (23%) of black members have missed a regular daily meal to help balance their budget compared to one in 11 (9%) of the overall membership.
