Moves to extend working time limits to transport workers could limit drivers' overtime earnings, and so the South Yorkshire Joint Industrial Council for the road haulage industry has increased basic rates significantly. Drivers' rates now start at £5.33 an hour, rising to a top rate of £5.88 for all hours worked up to and including 48 a week. These are increases of over 15% on the previous rates. The subsistence rate is set at £23.70, and night premia range from £1.16 to £1.28 an hour. Holidays are paid at the rate of 10 hours per day, with the 20-day entitlement now rising to 22 days after two years' service (plus statutory holidays). The deal is described as a Productivity Agreement, and absorbs all bonus schemes.
