Global woman: Nannies, maids and sex workers in the new economy

Edited by Barbara Ehrenreich and Arlie Russell Hochschild, Granta Books, 328 pages, paperback, £8.99

This book looks at globalisation from a new angle, arguing that caring work has become globalised as affluent and middle class families in the First World are employing migrant nannies and domestic workers from the Third World.

However, this migration is creating a "care deficit" in poor countries as millions of women leave their own families behind to care for other people's children.

The book tells the stories of women leaving the Philippines, Mexico, Thailand, Sri Lanka and Eastern Europe to work in North America, Europe and Hong Kong as cleaners, nannies and sex workers.

The editors point out that women migrants are often less visible than men, as they work in the private, domestic sphere. This fascinating book should help to create a greater awareness of their lives.
