Terms of equality


Earlier this year, the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE) produced a glossary and thesaurus of gender and gender equality terms.


It aims to foster a common understanding of gender equality terms across the EU and promote gender-fair and inclusive language to improve equality between women and men.


The institute’s glossary contains over 400 terms in English with their definitions and sources, including a whole section on work terms, such as “equal pay for work of equal value” and “informal work”.


The hope is that the online tool will also contribute to more gender-sensitive language and challenge terms that reinforce gender stereotypes and ignore gender differences.
