AGM agrees changes

The 2018 annual general meeting of the Labour Research Department (LRD) agreed that the LRD should become a company limited by guarantee in order to provide greater protection to members and affiliates and make it easier for subscribers and suppliers to deal with us.

Despite this change in form, the aim is to ensure there is no change in the way that LRD operates or is governed. So the key elements of the LRD’s current constitution, including the objects and the voting rights of affiliates, have been retained in the proposed Articles of the new company.

The existing individual members and affiliates will become members and affiliated members of the new company.

It is intended that the switch from the current structure to the new legal form should take place at midnight on 30 June 2018.

The meeting also heard from TUC senior economist Geoff Tily, who set out current forecasts for the UK economy and underlined its lacklustre performance.

• Members of the 2018-19 LRD executive committee (and nominating organisation/member): Helen Donoghue, chair (UCU); David Ayrton, vice-chair (NUJ); Howard Marchant, treasurer (individual member); Michelle Codrington-Rogers (NASUWT); Katie Collins (SCP); Ron Douglas (RMT); Rick Graham (Unite); Andy Hourigan (ASLEF); Jonathan Jeffries (Conel-CCCG college); Robert Phillips (NEU-NUT section); Michelle Singleton (UNISON); Joe Simpson (POA); Val Stansfield (TSSA); Bill Taylor (CWU) and Laurence Turner (GMB).
