Contribution rates

Members of the NUJ journalists’ union have rejected a rise in union contribution rates proposed by the union’s national executive committee.

The union’s annual delegate meeting voted down the planned 2.5% increase — which would have been the first rise in four years — arguing that subs were already too high.

The executive’s aim was to raise income by £300,000 over the next two years to avoid the sort of deep financial crisis faced by the union six years ago. However, those opposing said that a better way to raise income was to prioritise recruitment.

Delegates also voted for the union to consider offering lower membership subscriptions for first-time joiners and those earning less than £30,000.
