New BECTU general secretary
Gerry Morrissey has been elected unopposed as general secretary of broadcasting and entertainment union BECTU. The election took place following the death of his predecessor, Roger Bolton, last November. Morrissey was the union's assistant general secretary and has been a member or employee of the union since he was 17. He has led two strikes at the BBC and masterminded the first national theatre strike for 90 years, over pay in regional theatres, in 1990.
