Success for part-time worker
A part-time lecturer who worked more hours than her full-time colleagues has won a settlement in her claim under the Part-time Workers (Prevention of Less Favourable Treatment) Regulations 2000.
Susan Birch, who has worked at Leeds Metropolitan University for seven years as a lecturer teaching English as a foreign language and as a teacher trainer, earned up to £10,000 less than colleagues for doing like work. For several years she also taught more hours than her colleagues did.
In a settlement reached in advance of a final tribunal hearing, Birch’s employer gave her £25,000 in compensation and transferred her to a full-time, permanent contract.
