Professionalism, the third logic
Eliot Freidson, Polity, 250 pages, paperback £15.99, hardback £55.00
The author, who is an American professor, contrasts three accounts of professionalism. In one, specialised workers control their own work; in the second they work freely with no control except that of consumers; and another way is a bureaucracy where managers dominate.
He makes a very thorough analysis of professionalism but in a book really aimed at academic use.
