BECTU makes dramatic bid for recognition of freelances

Broadcasting union BECTU has launched a campaign to secure union recognition for freelance workers on the BBC1 soap opera EastEnders. Members have being complaining about their situation there to the union, especially around pay.

“Freelances on the show feel extremely vulnerable and unable to speak out for fear of not being hired again,” explained BECTU national official Spencer MacDonald. “BECTU wants to be able to give freelances a voice and help fight for better working terms and conditions.”

With some freelances not having received a pay rise for seven years, MacDonald says many are unaware that their permanent colleagues receive regular increases every year.

Union reps and officials have visited the EastEnders set and handed out a petition for freelances — whether BECTU members or not — to sign. The union has promised to keep the completed petition forms confidential.
