Outsourced cleaners to strike at Sellafield
More than 300 workers employed by the Mitie facilities management company at the Sellafield nuclear power plant have said they are ready to take industrial action. The outsourced cleaners, who are members of the GMB union, had been promised a 10.1% cost of living pay rise back in November 2022. However, Mitie reportedly failed to make good on its promise and is now saying that the workers will only get their rise in April 2023. The six-month delay was enough to push the cleaners to vote to down tools.
Oli Slack, GMB organiser, said: “These workers are rightly furious after broken promises from Mitie bosses. These men and women do a back-breaking, often dirty job keeping this huge nuclear site clean.
“Mitie promised them a pay rise in November – they should stick to it. GMB is ready to get back round the table to avert this industrial action.”
