Retirement age back on the agenda

The CGT, the second-largest union confederation in France has called for “a powerful day of strikes and demonstrations” on Tuesday 1 October to press, among other things for the cancellation in the increase in the retirement age.

The CFDT, the largest confederation, is not supporting the strike call. But it also says the government must look again at the pension changes it introduced in 2023, including the increase in the retirement age to 64.

With the new prime minister, Michel Barnier, lacking a majority in parliament, and both the left wing New Popular Front and the far right National Rally calling for the reversal of the 2023 changes, the retirement age is back on the agenda.
