Learning resource tackles risks posed by AI
The TUC has produced an online learning resource for union reps and members who would like to know more about the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) in the workplace and to help them negotiate agreements on the issue with employers.
The TUC points out that AI, surveillance and worker data are being used to develop systems that automate worker management and squeeze out more productivity. It warns that “the negative impacts on workers can be severe”.
It also warned that the government is failing to protect workers from being exploited by the new technologies, noting that AI-powered technologies are now making “high-risk, life changing” decisions about workers’ lives, such as line-management and hiring and firing staff.
The new resource introduces learners to the digital systems being used to manage workers. It details the potential harms and benefits of artificial intelligence and shows how to explain the issues to others. It also prepares learners to support their union in negotiating agreements on the issue.
The free online learning resource can be stopped and returned to at the learner’s convenience, and takes a total of just over 30 minutes to complete.
It provides the participant with a “digital credential” on completion. Digital credentials are a record of achievement, which the TUC is now awarding learners for training, skills and achievements.
