Decarbonisation funds for steel

Steel unions Community, GMB and Unite called on the UK government to step up and be ready to commit money earmarked to enable British Steel to decarbonise “in the right way” after national officials held “constructive” talks with the company’s Jingye Chinese parent company.

They presented a report from Syndex industry experts recommending the operation of two blast furnaces at Scunthorpe, Humberside until new technologies are introduced.

This will facilitate “a smooth and low-risk transition” to greener steelmaking, they said.
