Businesses fail to protect workers from fluids hazards
HSE unannounced inspections are continuing at precision engineering companies this month after half of checks identified failings in protecting workers from the dangers of metalworking fluids. Most businesses inspected are not doing enough to protect workers from harm to their lungs and skin from “white water”.
Many were not carrying out health checks, despite health surveillance being a legal requirement where there is exposure to fluid or mist. There was also poor performance around controlling metalworking fluid risks in businesses using CNC computer numerical control machines, which should be fitted with LEV local exhaust ventilation.
“Lung problems and irritated skin don’t have to be associated with working with metalworking fluid if you take the right precautions,” said HSE inspector Fiona McGarry. “It is really important that control measures and fluid quality checks are in place to keep workers healthy.”
