Rights body issues advice on menopause
New guidance from the Equality and Human Rights Commission aims to clarify employers’ legal obligations under the Equality Act to protect women workers experiencing menopause symptoms and provide practical advice on the reasonable adjustments they can make to avoid discrimination.
One in 10 women who work during the menopause leave their jobs due to symptoms, while two thirds of working women with the menopause say symptoms have a detrimental impact on them at work. However, very few workers request workplace adjustments during this time, often citing concerns about negative reactions and inadequate responses.
EHRC chairwoman Baroness Kishwer Falkner commented: “An employer understanding their legal duties is the foundation of equality in the workplace. But it is clear that many may not fully understand their responsibility to protect staff going through the menopause. ”
