Unite agrees to back PR
For the first time in its history, the Unite general union has agreed to back proportional representation (PR) for Westminster elections. Its recent policy conference agreed that the current first-past-the-post system should be abandoned and moves to PR should be supported.
The move came just weeks after a motion at this year’s Labour Party conference calling on the party to support PR fell, largely due to a lack of support from Labour-affiliated unions, including Unite.
