Prison officers’ union highlights PTSD study
The POA prison officers’ union has highlighted new research raising awareness and developing understanding of the experiences of ex-prison officers in the UK who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Prison officers are exposed to “a multitude of potentially traumatic events”, including violent incidents on prisoners and staff and witnessing self-harm and suicidal behaviour. But the study reports that “no literature has yet explored the experiences of PTSD within ex- or serving UK prison officers, and it remains a topic seldom raised in the public eye”.
