Three-year deal signed for Italian health service
Unions have reached a new settlement for around 540,000 employees in the Italian public heath service. The deal, which was signed with Aran, the agency representing the Italian government in public sector negotiations, covers three years from 1 January 2019 until 31 December 2021. The fact that this period is in the past reflects the difficulty in reaching agreement on the financing of all public sector deals, although delays in reaching agreements that last for months or even years are not unusual in Italy.
Pay for the benchmark grade goes up by €90 a month, and other improvements in other areas increase the overall value of the deal to about 7.22%. Inflation in Italy is currently 6.8% (May).
There is also a fundamental reform of pay and responsibility structures which the unions have warmly welcomed. Maurizio Landini, general secretary of CGIL, Italy’s largest union confederation, expressed “great satisfaction” at the deal.
