General strike

The main Greek trade union confederation, GSEE, has called a 24-hour general strike for 20 November to protest against falling living standards, particularly emphasising rising housing costs.

It is also calling for a return to national collective bargaining to set the level of the national minimum wage, something the government has refused.

The GSEE says that workers’ purchasing power has fallen by 8% since 2019, when the current prime minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis of the centre-right New Democracy party, first took office.
