Unions speak out on violence against women elimination day

The trade union federations of Britain and Ireland marked 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, by calling for interventions to support victims and survivors of domestic and sexual violence in work and society.

The TUC, STUC, WTUC and ICTU called on their respective governments to immediately ratify ILO (International Labour Organization) Convention 190 on Violence and Harassment in the World of Work.

Their call was echoed by the International Trade Union Confederation, the ITUC, which said that the Covid-19 crisis has exacerbated the risks of violence and harassment at work and at home, and highlighted the importance of preventive measures to ensure safe and healthy working environments.

It recommended that: “while the pandemic has necessarily focused the attention of governments on dealing with the public health, economic and social impacts, [it] is a reason to push forward with ratification, rather than delay it further.”
