Pharmacists’ union affiliates to ICTU
The 30,000-strong PDA pharmacists’ union is to affiliate to the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU) from January 2021.
The PDA, both a professional association and union, represents employed and locum UK pharmacists and has 700 members in Northern Ireland. The ICTU is the national union centre for the island of Ireland.
The PDA made history in 2019 by winning a seven-year battle for recognition with Boots. Pharmacists working for the company voted to end recognition of a “sweetheart” union to allow them to vote for recognition of the independent PDA union. It is already affiliated to Unions21 and the General Federation of Trade Unions, but is not as yet affiliated to the TUC.
