Four day work five day pay trial begins

Seventy UK companies have begun a six month pilot scheme in which 3,300 employees will work a four day week but be paid for a five day one.

The experiment is being organised by international campaign group 4 Day Week Global, which lobbies for a change to four day working weeks.

Participants in the pilot will range from a local fish and chip shop to large corporates, it says, and researchers will work with each organisation to measure the impact on productivity in the business and the wellbeing of its workers, as well as the impact on the environment and gender equality.

Joe O Connor, CEO of 4 Day Week Global, commented: “As we emerge from the pandemic, more and more companies are recognising that the new frontier for competition is quality of life, and that reduced-hour, output-focused working is the vehicle to give them a competitive edge.” Government-backed four day week trials are also due to begin later this year in Spain and Scotland.
