Health & Safety Matters

Grenfell

The general secretary of the FBU firefighters’ union, Matt Wrack, said the police investigation into the use of the so-called “stay put” policy at Grenfell “should not be allowed to divert attention from the real cause of the level of destruction”.

Last month, the Grenfell Tower inquiry began taking evidence about the events of 14 June 2017 when fire engulfed the residential tower block and resulted in the deaths of 72 people.

Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Police announced the opening of an investigation into the use of the “stay put” policy.

“Grenfell firefighters were dealing with an unprecedented situation that nobody had prepared for and that they should never have had to face,” said Wrack, adding that “fire safety measures within the building were utterly inadequate and completely failed”.

He added: “The real villain in this tragedy is the 40-year drive of deregulation that has left us with a fire safety system which is unfit for purpose.”
