CWU calls for review of Scottish dog control laws

The CWU communication workers’ union has joined growing calls for legal reform to deal with dangerous dogs after the Scottish Parliament debated a report detailing a continuing unacceptable level of attacks.

The July 2019 report by the Public Audit and Post-legislative Scrutiny Committee concluded that current dog control legislation is not fit for purpose and called on the Scottish government to undertake an immediate and comprehensive review of all dog control laws.

“Barely a week goes by without reports of yet another tragic incident,” said committee convener and North East Scotland Labour MSP Jenny Mara.

CWU health, safety and environment national officer Dave Joyce called on MSPs to “use your powers and act now” to introduce legal reforms and improve the enforcement of existing powers.

“The recommendations in the public audit committee’s report are very positive ones and it was also extremely important that the debate took place,” he said. “But the response so far of the Scottish administration as a whole has been disappointing — they seem to have kicked it down the road with the announcement of two consultations, when what is needed is action now.”
