Care pathway for ‘fume events’


Pilots’ union BALPA has helped develop a path in NHS care for pilots affected by a so-called “fume event” — an unusual odour, mist or smoke on an aircraft. 


In addition to symptoms including itching or soreness of the eyes, nasal discharge, sore throat and coughing, there are increasing concerns about possible long-term adverse health effects of exposure to contaminants in cabin air. 


BALPA has worked with clinical toxicologists, organisations including the Civil Aviation Authority, as well as academia to create the pathway, designed to give pilots a clearer understanding of who they should see if they have persisting symptoms following an event.
