Teacher workload under spotlight again

A government consultation on teacher workload has been welcomed by the NUT teachers’ union, whose members are said to be exhausted, with no time for a life outside of work or to prepare exciting lessons.

Deputy prime minister Nick Clegg said the new Department for Education Workload Challenge will aim to liberate teachers from “burdensome workloads” and invite them to tell the government what administrative tasks should be cut or scrapped.

Christine Blower, NUT general secretary, said: “Workload has gone up significantly under this government with many working 60 hours a week. It is unsustainable and resulting in the loss from the profession of a great many good teachers both young and older.”

Within these hours, teachers’ work included around 19 to 20 hours a week teaching and around 12 hours outside what might be regarded as their normal working week.
