PCS challenges HSE on aircon
The public and commercial services PCS union has challenged the Health and Safety Executive’s (HSE’s) position that air conditioning systems and desk fans pose “an extremely low risk” in the transmission of coronavirus.
Last month, the HSE published a statement claiming the risk of transmission through the use of ceiling and desk fans is “extremely low providing there is good ventilation in the area it is being used, preferably provided by fresh air”. The risk of air conditioning spreading Covid-19 in the workplace is extremely low as long as there is an adequate supply of fresh air and ventilation, it adds.
PCS has called on the HSE to revisit its position in the light of emerging scientific evidence, including studies by the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. The union has issued guidance to its reps based on these studies, outlining the risks and advising the use of air conditioning and desk fans is factored into risk assessments.
It says the Federation of European Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Associations backs up its concerns. It advises employers to implement several measures to make ventilation systems “Covid-secure”.
The union has asked HSE chief executive Sarah Albon how the safety watchdog has arrived at its conclusions and asked her to provide it with the evidence it has used.
