Cake refusal was not discrimination
The Supreme Court has held that a Christian bakery’s refusal to make a cake with the words “Support Gay Marriage” written on it was not direct discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation or political belief — Lee v Ashers Baking Company Ltd and Others2018 UKSC 49.
The Court says that the bakery’s objection was to the message itself and not because of the sexual orientation of the customer, or anyone that he was “associated with”.
