History project
The Unite union has launched a history project aimed at “engaging directly with a new generation of workers and activists”. It is part of the centenary history of one of Unite’s predecessor unions, the Transport and General Workers Union (TGWU), which was formed in 1922.
The idea is to engage activists in their own original research, including first-hand account interviews, on the history of their own workplaces, sectors and regions. They will contribute to a planned six-part national history of the TGWU.
Unite general secretary Len McCluskey said: “As trade unionists, we must look to our history to understand why unions … are more necessary today than they ever have been.”
