Failures over asbestos in academy school

A Birmingham academy and a glass firm have been fined for safety failings after a job exposed workers to asbestos. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) prosecuted Equitas Academies Trust, the owner and operator of Aston Manor Academy, and Birmingham Glass Services Ltd.

The HSE uncovered safety failings including workers not being provided with protective equipment, such as face masks. They were therefore exposed to loose asbestos fibres when removing the asbestos packers and breaking them into pieces.

The academy was fined £7,500 plus costs and the contractor £5,000 plus costs.
