Third runway must get underway

As cabinet ministers last month backed a third runway at Heathrow Airport, unions and the TUC called for “work to start as soon as possible”.

With MPs preparing to vote on whether to give final approval to the expansion of Heathrow, TUC general secretary Frances O’Grady said it was time for a clear and final decision.

“The case for Heathrow expansion was proven long ago,” she said. “It will create thousands of high-quality jobs and apprenticeships. And it has the backing of both trade unions and businesses.”

O’Grady added: “Work must start as soon as possible, with the government doing all it can to keep progress in the fast lane.”

The Unite union warned that more delay would further postpone the economic boost and jobs that Heathrow expansion will bring, while “gifting” the airport’s international competitors a clear commercial advantage.

The GMB general union said that with 180,000 new jobs at stake, the time for “dithering and delaying” was over.
