35-hour week CWU’s aim at Royal Mail


Communication workers’ union CWU is to push for a shorter working week of 35-hours by 2020 as a priority aim during the forthcoming negotiations with Royal Mail.


CWU deputy general secretary Terry Pullinger said there was a significant body of independent research indicating that a shorter working week, linked to improvements in working practices and organisation, led to people being able to work better and more effectively while reducing fatigue. The union is to use this evidence in talks with the company.


The union is aiming to reach its goal of a shorter working week on a phased basis, while protecting full-time jobs.
