New advice for first aiders

Since 1 October 2013, the HSE has stopped approving first aid training and qualifications. The changes in the rules mean that employers can now choose a training provider as well as the level of training necessary for their staff.

However, trade unions can still play a key role to ensure that a competent training provider is chosen for the appropriate level of training.

The HSE has revised its guidance on choosing a first aid training provider, which reps can refer to, to help an employer to choose an appropriate provider.

Appropriate first aid training is available from a wide range of providers. This includes those who choose to offer regulated first aid qualifications, training providers operating under voluntary approval schemes, independent training providers and voluntary aid societies, like the St John’s Ambulance.

First aid training providers should be able to show that they satisfy criteria previously set down by the HSE, which includes the minimum qualifications expected of trainers and assessors. Training providers should also have in place mentoring, quality assurance systems, teaching and standards of first aid practice.

The HSE strongly recommends that qualified first aiders take annual refresher training. It is not compulsory, but it will help first aiders keep their skills up-to-date and refresh their knowledge so they can effectively carry out their role.
